Leather riding crops

We recently acquired a few second hand equestrian items from a local farmer. Two of these items were leather wrapped / braided riding crops:

On it's whip page Wiki describes these as:
"show cane[s]s ...  a short, stiff cane that may be plain, leather covered or also covered with braided leather. Rarely used now except in formal show hacking events"
I often wondered what was inside these crops. When I did some research I discovered:
"The shaft or stock of the whip was traditionally made of cane, with time more whips were "Steel lined", which meant that they were more difficult to break. The stock could be left as varnished cane, smoked, to give a darker appearance, or it could be covered in plain or braided leather or braided linen, horsehair, catgut or whalebone. The covered stocks are easier to grip in wet weather..."
Our two new ones were beautifully made:

Regular readers will know we already own two of this type of crop / cane.  Here's two posts where they feature:
So why get more?  Well first because caning is our very favorite thing and we are always interested to try out new implements and discovering new effects and marks:
Equally importantly, these particular crops:
  • seriously push my erotic buttons (I find braided leather over a cane very hot, both the texture in my hands and the marks)
  • were the type of crops used at Roissy in "Story of O" so they've always had that early kink link for me
  • I find extremely easy to use (the leather wrapping adds stability and substance to the central rod, which means they go where I want them to ... so a great tool for new dominants)
  • they are excellent corporal punishment instruments to travel with (the leather means they rarely snap and they are also fine re airport security as they are genuine equestrian products)
  • are not used so often these days for their original purpose so can be hard to track down, so when we see some second hand we always buy them. One I bought for $1 at a local market. These two new ones were $10 each. Extremely good value for something that's unique and well made.
  • make the dominants using them look elegant :) . If you are ever looking for a great female dominant look but are not into the black leather / high boots thing, I recommend the Riding Mistress look: you can get almost everything at a vanilla store, your riding boots are flat which makes play easier and bespoke equestrian riding crops are very classy. It's also easy to travel with these kinds of clothes:

As you can imagine, I wanted to try our new implements out straight away ... so I upended sol on his way to work this morning *grin*:

I tried the smaller one out first:

Then moved to the larger one. This was so well balanced that I could use it from either side:

With their supple rods and large leather flaps (called the keeper) they are also great for striking between the cheeks and connecting with genitals:

At one point I was using both at the same time, one horizontally and the other vertically.   sol went off happily to work with his bum a gentle shade of pink:

Meanwhile I look forward to giving these implements a real workout this weekend :)

If you are interested in buying something like this, check out your local markets and second hard horsey venues (pony clubs for example).  You'll find more expensive new ones (but lovely work) online.  I won't link to them as they are vanilla sites but if you google "equestrian wrapped leather crops" or "show / hacker canes" you'll find some. No money, but still interested? I hope this one vanilla site will forgive me the link - if you want to DIY your own hacking cane, check out this link.

How about cleaning the leather after play?  Yes you can usually clean leather whips for use with other play partners but the leather wrapping and braiding on these makes cleaning tricky. I keep these just for sol, as he is fluid bonded to them. One vanilla website that makes exquisite crops suggests:
"The leather will require only the gentlest cleaning. Care should be taken to avoid the Sterling silver collar or end cap. Saddle soap may be used to clean the leather, preferably one with conditioning properties. There is no need to oil the leather if it is cleaned regularly, unless it becomes particularly dry".
Have fun :)

If i may say.... i love !!! your new crops they are gorgeous!!

W has (let me think now) i believe he has 4 crops... all with braided leather.

When he bought the 3rd one i sorta pooh poohed the whole thing saying something to the effect "you've felt one crop - you've felt them all) BOY was i wrong !!! Of the 4 there is one i love !! and 1 i absolutely HATE... it stings something awful.

i find it interesting how 4 so similar toys feel so very different...

Enjoy your new crops :)

morningstar,

Exactly! You are absolutely right. I guess it's in part because they are not mass produced, the braiding / wrapping on each is unique, so that effects how they feel. So pleased we share a love of these :)
